In the case of young beginners (ages 5 to 8), it is essential that either parent (whether they are musicians or not) be present at each lesson to observe and take notes regarding important procedures to carry out during the child's practice sessions. Little children need one parent with them throughout each daily practice period (I recommend a half hour of practice daily, six days a week), to guide and encourage them.
Older and more advanced students may resent parents' suggestions regarding their practicing but nevertheless appreciate and need their encouragement and support. Nearly all children dislike being alone during the practice period. This can be overcome by one parent being present either reading or writing a letter, etc., and offering the occasional remark when the child has made a fine effort on a piece, study, or technical exercise.
Music training is a 6-8 year venture and not a "wait and see if (s)he takes to it." Progress moves at different rates depending on the child's developmental stage. Parents should understand that every child is always interested in music, no matter what the appearance. Protests are linked to many reasons, but not to a lack of interest in music.
Children will always thrive in an encouraging and supportive environment.
